008 - Monaco

Two thousand and seventy-three metres. That's the whole lap.

Monaco is the shortest circuit in top-flight racing and the only one where the track is simply the town — the same streets, the same tunnel under the same hotel, closed for a weekend and handed back on Monday. It has been run since 1929, which means it predates the idea that a racing circuit should be purpose-built at all.

What the map won't tell you is how steeply it climbs. From Sainte Dévote the road rises 42 metres up Beau Rivage to Casino Square, doubles back down through Mirabeau and the Grand Hotel Hairpin — the slowest corner in the sport — and drops all the way to sea level at the tunnel mouth. A lap of Monaco is a hill climb and a descent packed into two kilometres.

This print is a survey of that.

The circuit is traced from real geographic data — the actual surveyed line through the streets, not an illustration — and coloured by height, so the climb to Casino reads straight off the map. Below it, the elevation profile plots the whole rise and fall against distance, marking the summit and the low point at the tunnel. Fourteen named sections are keyed to the chart: Massenet, Portier, Tabac, La Rascasse. The way a surveyor annotates a drawing, not the way a poster decorates one.
