002 - Spa

Corner names travel. Eau Rouge travelled further than most.

It's the lowest point on the circuit — a left-hand dip at the bottom of a valley in the Ardennes forest. What makes it famous is what happens next: Raidillon, the climb straight back out, steep enough that drivers lose sight of the road over the crest and take it on faith. Across the full 7-kilometre lap, Spa-Francorchamps rises and falls 102 metres. It has been doing this since 1925, when the course ran on public roads between three Belgian villages.

This print is a survey of that ground.

The lap is traced from real geographic data — the surveyed line, not an illustration — and coloured by height, so the climb reads straight off the map. Green through the valley at Eau Rouge. Deep red at the top of the Kemmel rise. Below it, the elevation profile plots the whole ascent and descent against distance, with the low point and the summit marked. Fourteen named sections are keyed to the map: La Source, Pouhon, Blanchimont, Stavelot. The way a surveyor annotates a chart, not the way a poster decorates one. Just Spa, measured. One plate in a numbered series of the world's great circuits, built to hang together.
