001 - Nurburgring

Jackie Stewart called it the Green Hell. He wasn't talking about the corners.

He was talking about the ground. Over one 20.8-kilometre lap, the Nordschleife falls into a valley at Breidscheid and climbs 297 metres back out to Hohe Acht — a mountain road with a start line, cut through the Eifel forest in 1927 and never really tamed since. Seventy-three corners have names. Fuchsröhre. The Karussell. Döttinger Höhe. Drivers speak them the way sailors speak of headlands.

Most circuit prints give you a black squiggle and a name underneath. This one gives you the mountain.

The lap is traced from real geographic data — the actual surveyed line, not an illustration — and coloured by height, so you can read the climb straight off the map. Green in the valley floor. Deep red on the high ground. Below it, the elevation profile plots the whole brutal rise and fall against distance, with the low point and the summit marked. Fourteen named sections are keyed to the map, the way a surveyor annotates a chart. Just the Nordschleife, measured. One plate in a numbered series of the world's great circuits, built to hang together.
